Ontario Furries updates - May 2009

www.ontariofurries.ca

Been a while since I sent out any updates on what's happening there.

Since my last update in May of last year (has it really been that long?), we've grown by another 232 members to 632 and become a "home" to many Ontario furs, introducing them to the local furry community and helping them meet new furry friends where they live and get involved with the furry community.

We've been joined by a couple brother sites as well:

www.albertafurries.ca was started in December and is up to 289 and as I hear has revitalized the Alberta furry community from having nothing happening to having meets with 70 furs attending.

www.bcfurries.com was started March and is up to 162 members.

Much appreciation to everyone that's become involved with the site, sharing profiles and participating in the forums, and especially those who've been offering their suggestions and criticisms and helping moderate the forum and the IRC channel. With all your support it's really grown into an invaluable resource for furries in Ontario and developed in to a very supportive and friendly community.

Special thanks to those who suggested setting up a forum on the board. I was skeptical that it would be useful myself but I think it's been a critical factor in helping the site in "becoming the hub for everything furry in Toronto, GTA, or Ontario in general."

I'm looking forward to seeing some of you at the Islington Furmeet, www.islingtonfurmeet.ca , on June 6th. :)

Toronto Furry Convention Dates

I'm trying to collect some more data on prefered dates for the convention.

If people could reply to me, or better yet, post it in the forum, that would help us a lot. We really want to make this something that will help the whole furry community as much as possible and your opinions, therefore, are very important to us.

Here's the thread for the poll about the date.

Islington Furmeet 3 - Feb. 21 - Etobicoke, ON

Next Islington meet is scheduled for February 21st in Etobicoke, Ontario (west side of Toronto).

We'll be updating the web site as we have more information, but again, we're planning on having games, videos, food, dealers, artists and fursuiters.

http://www.ontariofurries.ca/islingtonfurmeet/3/

We've also set up a message board for the meet:

www.ontariofurries.ca

New location of the Toronto Furry Home Page expanded to include furries across Ontario, Canada.

We have searchable profiles for locals, a member map, calendar, chat room, and Forum.

We've been using it the last 4 days and everything seems to be working fine.

Much thanks to Echelon for hosting for us and everyone who's volunteered to contribute ideas and content and volunteered to help managed it.

I've been helping people log into their accounts that were imported from the old system.

If anyone has any more ideas or suggests, or wants to contribute or host a message board, let us know.

Capital Furs Presents: Purrliament - Jan 31st

[howiepup just asked me to spread this around]

http://capitalfurs.myfreeforum.org/about546.html

Ashes:

Disclaimer: Ironclaw picked the name, I was going with 'AnthrOttawa'. Reguardless, the United Nations set laws in the early 80's that all furry events must have silly names. We're just obeying international law.

When: January 31st, 2009. 12pm-10pm
Where: Carleton University, Tory Building, Second Floor, 360 Tory and several classrooms around it.
How Much?: $10

What is it? A mini-convention of sorts. We initially thought we could maybe see a 20+ or so attendance but with the recent resurgance in the Ottawa fandom we can likely see a higher number. The 360 Tory theater features a 200 seat theater that we will be showing various furry titles on it's projector. We will be showing Kung Fu Panda in high definition as well as a various other titles. During the entire day the theater will be operating. There will be video games set up for your entertainment, pick up and play arcade style fun. There will be artists and dealers tables set up and some other stuff.

Specifics?

Artists and Dealers: For any artist or dealer your admission and table space will infact be FREE. If you have works for sale, want to sell comissions, do on the fly sketches or just show off your work we'll let you do so. The same goes for anyone with furry merchandise or materials for sale. Ears, tails, comic books you're reselling, what ever, it's all good. For additional information or to sign you, you can email me here: ashleyashes1983@gmail.com

Video Games: Well, what's convention like fun without video games? Personally I'm bringing in the Namco light gun shooter 'Ghoul Panic' which is similar in style to the Point Blank series only it's in 3D and features blue and pink anthropomorphic cats that look somewhat like the VG cats. There are also other video games will set up. If there is anyone that would like to supply the event with a full on Rockband setup, it would be greatly appreciated. You can email me or post in this thread with your offerings.

Theater: Furry classics, what can I say? If you ever can't find something to do there will at least be something showing on the screen for you to enjoy. If you have titles to su

Discussion groups and demonstrations: Nothing is on the books yet but nothing is ruled out either. This is the kind of content that is for the audience to assist with. Discussion groups on particular furry related topics, fursuiters doing demonstrations or games and other stuff like that is what we're looking for. If you have a suggestion blurt it out, we'd love to hear from you.

Want to help? This is the kind of event that is fueled by volenteering resources and time. This is about the fandom working together for fandom events. Televisions, video game systems, cars to assist with materials transportion, ideas or just your time to help with the events. If you can volenteer particularly useful resources (especially transportation) we can see about rewarding you for your efforts. These details will be discussed case by case and in private.

This is also an event that costs money, there is money spent running it but we also hope to turn a profit. Not a personal profit but to get a bank roll to spend on future events, to have prizes and contests and other shiny things. If successful, we will be looking at doing another one in six months time and then another six months and maybe this could even grow into a full fledged convention.

Islington Furmeet Thanks

Thanks Ki, for getting to room for us and the parking passes and setting up and cleaning up after.

Lots of thanks to our anonymous sponsor for putting up the money to pay for the room, you really helped make everything possible.

Thanks to Pakesh for doing so much work making sure everything was running well, that our supplies were stocked, that the fridge had drinks and the garbage didn't over floor, helping cooking, and making sure everyone was safe. You helped a lot more than I expected and I really appreciated it.

Thanks to Danruk for cooking chili for everyone and making pop corn. :)

Thanks to Bungee for setting up videos to show everyone and providing music. I know a lot of people enjoyed those. And also for helping let people in all night and lending your phone so furs could buzz the party room.

Thanks to Morgan for getting some fursuit activities together.

Thanks to Jean and Robodobie for driving me to pick up supplies for the party when they ran out. That was really appreciated.

Thanks to everyone that bought food and drinks to the party and payed a little extra for pizza, that was appreciated, especially by those that came late and would have otherwise missed out on pizza.

Thanks to everyone that brought games for everyone to play, I saw everyone having fun with those.

Thanks to our fursuiters who worked so hard entertaining everyone. You really brought a lot of fun to the party and I know everyone enjoyed it.

Thanks to our dealers and artists for giving everyone a chance to buy some stuff there, I hope you did well.

Thanks to those that came early and helped move furniture and set things up, and thanks to those that stayed late to help clean up, and to everyone that helped carry a box or a table or anything else. You all helped a lot.

And mostly thank you to everyone who came, especially from those that came from so far away, driving many hours, just to be with us; all our efforts were for you and seeing you all there having fun made it all worth it.

For those of you that couldn't make it, I'm sorry you couldn't come and you were missed, but I still appreciate the enthusiasm and encouragement you gave us anyway. Hopefully you'll be able to come another time.

I'm really sorry I wasn't able to spend as much time with all of you as I wanted. I know a lot of you came to see me, but I was really busy going around doing errands and letting people in and stuff. I'll take a look at all the things I needed to get and make sure I get them ahead of time so I can spend more time getting to know everyone next time. :)

Thanks to everyone that came to the Swiss Chalet on Friday for dinner and to the Zoo on Sunday. Those were both fun too. Maybe we should do that again. :)

Here's a note I think I should pass on to everyone from Jean who drove one of our attendees who was coming to his first furmeet and stayed with us and even helped run a supply errand:

Dear Dan l just want to say thanks for a great time l had lots of fun and every one was so kind to me and l hope to see you all again i hope we can get together real soon thanks to you all for every thing Jean God Bless You All bye for now.

Ruff,s Mom

It's really nice to see when we can all come together and enjoy furry with each other, and even make such a good impression those that join us that aren't furry. I've very proud of you all. Thanks again and I look forward to helping make this possible again.

Islington Furmeet Update

Date: Saturday, November 8th, 2008
Location: 25 Mabelle Avenue, Etobicoke, Ontario
Web Site: http://www.furnation.com/toronto/furmeet/

Our chairperson, Ki Wind, who's hosting the meet asked me to put out a

message again.

Last time we had 34 attendees. This time we have 49 registered and 71

maybes for a possible 119 attendees from every corner of Ontario and into

Quebec and New York state.

There's a little over two weeks left.

Food
----

What we're looking for now is ideas on what to do for lunch and dinner

and offers to bring food, snacks and drinks for everyone.

For Snacks right now we have Danruk bringing Popcorn, Black Mage Kitty

bringing sunchips and cases of pop, and Sparrow bringing Potato Chips.

Danruk's also offered chili for dinner and Deoge has offered a few dozen

large muffins.

Crosse Wolf is bringing 50 - 66 paper plates and maybe cups.

Last time, I went out and bought enough things to make sandwiches for

everyone for lunch and that worked out fine, so I don't mind doing that

again. I also did a few runs to pick up more cases of pop to make sure it

didn't run out and I don't mind doing that again.

Last time for dinner, we did a collection and ordered chinese food.

Events
------

We're also looking for ideas for events and people to volunteer to run

them.

We're currently looking to have a fursuiting performance workshop lead by

Danny Dingo and Fursuit Games lead by Morgan. We've also had people

propose a fursuit parade, DDR competition, and art jam.

We're thinking of leaving the third room open for anyone who wants to run

an event.

Artist / Dealers
----------------

We'll have tables set up for those that want to sell things again. Last

time, we had 4 people selling things or offering commissions and they did

about $72 in sales altogether.

I've set up a page on the web site for artists who are attending to show

samples of their work on, and one for dealers to show what they'll be

selling.

Fursuiters
----------

Last time, we had 5 fursuiters. This time, we're looking at having 10,

with some debuting new fursuits.

I set up a page on the site for fursuiters to put up pics of the suits

they'll be bringing.

Games
-----

Last time, Richard K Niner brought a lot of games. I brought a cribbage

board and had some fun playing that.

Richard has his own copy of Bang! this time. :)

Black Mage Kitty is bringing a Wii, PS3, and extra controlers and would

like suggestions for games.

Ciello is bringing a deck fo Magic cards.

Sparrow is bringing a PSP, a Nintendo DS, and a Wiimote.

A/V
---

Bungee Skunk got a video projector from his old work he's offered to

bring, so maybe we can set something up with that too.

A number of furries felt they wanted a new channel so I talked with a lot of them and figured out what to name it and where to put it.

Registered it on Sept. 11th and got up to 19 users the first night.

Drajielcoon, twylight and I had a discussion on what the rules would be and decided a good compromise would be: 1. Use Common Sense 2. No Flamewars 3. No Public Yiff

Super Operators are: Blackthorn, Snowfox, KI-Wind, Mune, Peacimowen, RingtailedFox, D_Bandit, Xion. Operators are: Drajielcoon, twylight, ErikMouse, Echelon

Echelon set up a stats page for us--looks kinda nifty and useful saying when it's active and giving random quotes and such:

http://www.fuzzylogics.org/page/stats/ontariofurries/

I set up the web chat interface to work with it and preconfigured a windows client for it to help people find it and get connected. You can get those on Toronto Furry's irc page:

http://www.furnation.com/toronto/irc.html

And I wanted to try setting up a mailing list / forum to go with it as well:

What's neat about this is that you can post and read messages using email, but it also works really nice to read and post from the web site as well if you don't want emails:

I wanted to have somewhere to go to chat with people where they could get messages and chat without having to be online all the time.

Just hit 400 furs on the locals list a couple days ago.

Been getting lots of suggestions to not have everone on the same page and be able to sort them by city so I did some work and set that up:
